Canton Lights Two Christmas Trees This Year, Then Packs Its Holidays Into One December Weekend

Two Christmas trees will be lit in Canton this November, ten days apart and about a mile from each other. The first goes up on a Wednesday night in Cannon Park. The second is lit on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, beside the Etowah River at The Mill. Between then and the winter break, downtown spreads its holiday events across three Thursdays and three Saturdays, then puts nearly all of its biggest events into one 48-hour stretch, December 11 through 13.

That's why a holiday calendar for Canton works better as a set of weekends than as a list of events. On December 12, a market, Santa, a parade and a stage show all fit into one walk down East Main Street, and no other weekend in the season packs in as much.

November opens twice

The city goes first. The Holiday Tree Lighting and Drone Show is Wednesday, November 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Cannon Park, 130 East Main Street. The Knox STEM Academy Chorus and the Avery Elementary Chorus perform. After the tree is lit, a drone show flies over Main Street, and the city says the drones have "quickly become a favorite part of our holiday celebration." The lighting is less than two weeks after this post goes up, and it falls on a school night.

The Mill on Etowah starts its season with a festival. Christmas at The Mill 2026 is the sixth annual edition. It runs Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 225 Reformation Parkway, with more than 85 vendor booths, holiday treats, Santa, and football on a big screen. The tree lighting there is Saturday, November 28, at 6 p.m. Joe Gransden performs, Canton City Lifestyle's Chicka Elloy hosts, and Santa arrives for the official lighting.

The two lightings draw different crowds for different reasons. The city's is a weeknight event built around school choirs. The Mill's falls on a holiday weekend, when college football is on and families have guests in town. If you have relatives visiting for Thanksgiving, the November 28 lighting is the one already on your calendar.

The rink runs through all of it

One attraction runs the whole season. Rink on the River opens for its sixth season on Saturday, November 21, and stays open through January 24. Admission is $15 per person. Skate rental is included, there's no time limit during operating hours, and your wristband lets you come and go all day.

The hours are worth checking before you go:

  • Regular hours: closed Monday. Tuesday through Thursday 4 to 8 p.m., Friday 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday noon to 8 p.m.
  • Opening week: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 22. Then 1 to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, November 23 to 25.
  • Thanksgiving Day: closed.
  • Christmas at The Mill weekend: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 29.

During opening week the rink is open on a Monday and from 1 p.m. on weekdays, so the days right before Thanksgiving are the easiest time for kids on break to skate in daylight. Every skater needs a signed waiver. For skaters under 16, a parent or legal guardian has to sign, even if they're only dropping off.

Downtown's December runs on Thursdays and Saturdays

After Thanksgiving, downtown's schedule repeats. Mistletoe on Main offers free wagon rides and Santa at the gazebo on three Thursday evenings, December 3, 10 and 17, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Cannon Park. In 2025 the city listed one Mistletoe on Main evening, December 18. This year there are three. Explore Canton lists live reindeer on December 3 and Christmas Pete on December 17. The December 10 attraction is listed only as a holiday activity to be announced.

On Saturdays, Visit with Santa runs at the Cannon Park gazebo from 2 to 5 p.m. on December 5, 12 and 19. Photos are self-service, so bring your own phone or camera.

Laid out by week, the pattern is easy to see. The middle weekend is the busiest.

Week Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
Dec. 3–6 Mistletoe on Main, live reindeer A Dickens' Christmas Carol, 8 p.m. Santa, 2–5 p.m.; Dickens, 8 p.m. Dickens, 2:30 p.m.
Dec. 10–13 Mistletoe on Main Christmas in Canton, 6–10 p.m.; Dickens, 8 p.m. Merry Market, noon–6; Santa, 2–5; Christmas Parade, 6 p.m.; Dickens, 8 p.m. Dickens, 2:30 p.m.
Dec. 17–20 Mistletoe on Main, Christmas Pete Grinchmas at The Mill, 5–9 p.m. Santa, 2–5; Elf, 3 p.m.; White Christmas, 7 p.m. —

December 11 through 13 is the weekend to keep open

The busiest weekend starts Friday night. Christmas in Canton runs December 11 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Cannon Park. Expect Santa, a petting zoo, face painting, wagon rides, inflatables, cookie decorating and crafts, with downtown shops and restaurants staying open late.

Saturday, December 12, is the most packed day of the season, and everything happens within a couple of blocks of East Main Street:

  1. Noon to 6 p.m.: the 39th Annual Downtown Canton Merry Market at Cannon Park.
  2. 2 to 5 p.m.: Santa at the gazebo, during the market.
  3. 6 p.m.: the Canton Optimist Club's 39th Annual Christmas Parade steps off as the market closes.
  4. 8 p.m.: A Dickens' Christmas Carol at Canton Theatre, 171 East Main Street, a short walk from the park.

According to the Canton Optimist Club, the official viewing route runs east from West Main Street and Waleska Street to North Street, then turns left and heads west on North Street. The club asks parade participants and guests to bring a canned food item for the Cherokee Schools food pantries. Donations are collected at both staging locations.

The club's 2026 staging instructions are written for parade entrants. They say West Main Street will be closed to traffic and point to parking around City Hall, Brown Park, or behind the courthouses on North Street. Spectators will be looking for the same spaces, so arriving during the market, well before 6 p.m., makes parking easier. The city's downtown parking map shows the parking decks, public lots, street parking and special-event parking around the square.

The play runs both weekends. Cherokee Theatre Company's comic A Dickens' Christmas Carol, now in its second year at Canton Theatre, plays December 4 and 5 at 8 p.m., December 6 at 2:30 p.m., December 11 and 12 at 8 p.m., and December 13 at 2:30 p.m. The city lists tickets at $19 to $22. The 8 p.m. show on December 12 is the obvious pick for anyone who wants the parade and the play on the same night. The Sunday matinee on December 13 works for families who would rather end the weekend quietly.

The week after the parade moves back to The Mill

The following weekend, the biggest event is back on the river. Grinchmas at The Mill is free on Friday, December 18, from 5 to 9 p.m. It includes a toy drive, the Grinch and other guests, Christmas train rides, a Christmas Pete pop-up, and The Grinch on the Green at 7 p.m. The rink is open until 9 p.m. on Fridays, so you can skate and see the movie on the same trip.

Canton Theatre wraps up the season on Saturday, December 19. Elf plays from 3 to 5 p.m., with $5 tickets going on sale December 1. White Christmas follows from 7 to 9 p.m. The last gazebo Santa session is from 2 to 5 p.m. that afternoon, which leaves time for photos before the 3 p.m. Elf show if you head over at 2.

What's new to eat at The Mill this season

The Mill's dining directory lists The Blend Nutrition Bar as "Opening Oct 2026," so it should be serving by the time the rink opens. Bully Run, the smashburger spot the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce announced in December 2025 for Suite 300, now posts daily hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Its closing time matches the rink's latest close. Little Alley Steak still shows "coming soon" with no date, so don't count on it for a holiday dinner.
